Camden Labour delivers 16 new police officers for wider Camden Town area

Monday, December 12th, 2011
Central Camden will see an extra 16 full time police officers patrolling its streets from early next year, thanks to the investment by Camden Labour. As well as Camden Town, surrounding neighbourhoods will also benefit from the deployment of these extra officers from Primrose Hill to Kentish Town, Somers Town to Haverstock Hill.

Local Labour councillors have campaigned  over the last few months to protect policing in the area, and to call upon the Council to invest in policing in the light of massive Tory Government cuts to front-line policing.

Phil Jones, Labour Councillor for Cantelowes ward said, “This is great news for Camden. We’ve been out speaking to residents over the last few months and there has been real concern about the Government’s cuts to police numbers. Residents concerns have really been listened to and this £400,000 investment will ensure that all our areas are safer.”

The new officers replace the existing team of Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) that the council had agreed to fund in the area until March 2012. While the PCSOs had made a genuine difference to cleaning up the area, residents feedback suggested they wanted officers with the power to make arrests and who would work the hours when most needed, rather than just daytime shifts.

Labour Councillor Abdul Hai, Cabinet Member for Community Safety said, “We took this decision to invest in a visible street presence in Camden Town to provide reassurance to all our different communities and businesses at a time of turbulence and cuts by the government. The new police officers, who have more powers of enforcement and arrest, will target these areas and drive down crime that will have knock on benefits across Camden to make it an even safer borough. Camden Labour remains committed to making the borough safer for our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Camden Town Labour Councillor Pat Callaghan added, “I am particularly pleased that the new officers will also now focus on the late hour when they are most needed.  Camden Town has the fourth largest night time economy in the UK and there have been real fears about the levels of crime such as drug offences and thefts. This is why we all campaigned strongly to strengthen policing locally and ensure that the gains made in reducing crime are continued, despite Tory Mayor Boris Johnsons short-sighted cuts to police in London”.

Labour wins Kentish Town by-election

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Labour’s Jenny Headlam-Wells has won the Kentish Town by-election.

The full result was as follows:

Jenny Headlam-Wells (Labour) 1,411
Nick Russell (Liberal Democrats) 715
Naomi Aptowitzer (Green) 349
Will Blair (Conservative) 186

Jenny said:  “I’m honoured and delighted to have been elected to Camden Council and I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me and supported me during this campaign.”

Jenny secured 53% of the vote and a massive swing of 10.3% away from the Lib Dems, who held all three councillors in the ward until May.

Camden Labour leader, Cllr Nasim Ali, said:  “This is testament to what we have been saying about the Coalition’s programme of cuts.  We have said we will stand up for the people of Camden against these cuts – and they have backed us in this election to do that.

“We had a good candidate here and we’ve won by a big margin.  In the past, Kentish Town was always Labour.”

Labour members in Kentish Town have chosen local mum and grandmother, Jenny Headlam-Wells, to stand in the forthcoming by-election on 28th October, following the sad death of Labour councillor, Dave Horan.

Jenny lives locally on Torriano Avenue. She taught English in London secondary schools and later worked as a lecturer in colleges and universities. She’s now retired and lives in Kentish Town near her grown-up children and grandchildren.

After being chosen as Labour’s candidate by local members, Jenny said: “It is a huge honour to be given the opportunity to stand to represent the people of Kentish Town.  I want to work alongside Kentish Town’s excellent Labour councillors, Meric and Georgia, to help local people and community groups, and to do whatever I can to protect them from central government cuts.

“I’d like to pay tribute to Dave Horan.  He served the people of Camden with such dedication for so many years and will be missed by all who knew him.”

Jenny has been Chair of Governors of a comprehensive school and governor of a Sixth Form College. She is currently a community governor at Torriano Junior School.

Our MP, Frank Dobson, hit the streets last weekend to meet the residents of Royal College Street and St Pancras Way, and take up their concerns where he could help.

Frank spoke to local people about issues ranging from improving the NHS to the Council’s cuts to our youth clubs, joining local campaigners, Phil Jones and Angela Mason.  One of the recurring themes was the continued failure of Lib Dem/Tory Camden Council to provide decent housing services to leaseholders and tenants alike, including the unpopular selling off of council housing to private developers despite Camden’s 18,000 waiting list.  Frank is giving his full support to Camden Labour’s fight to provide a decent place to live for all, including retaining our local council housing stock.
